This space was created from a place of need.
A need born from being tired of walking into rooms where no one looks like you. From being the only one in classrooms, workplaces, organizations, and social spaces. From constantly having to translate your experiences, explain your emotions, soften your truth, or make yourself more “palatable.”

The Only Black Girl was created because so many of us have spent years being unseen, misunderstood, and emotionally alone, even while surrounded by people. The Only Black Girl is a space where you don’t have to explain your culture. You don’t have to justify your feelings. You don’t have to shrink, code-switch, or perform.

  • Here, your experiences make sense.

  • Here, your story is familiar.

  • Here, you are understood, not questioned.

  • This is where Black women who are navigating marginalized spaces finally get to exhale, be held, and be seen.

When marginalized people gain voice and center their own experiences, things begin changing. And we see this in all kinds of grassroots movements.

Frequently asked questions?

  • That depends on how you know Dr. Colar. All are welcome to attend, with the exception of Dr. Colar’s professional clients. If you have previously worked with Dr. Colar in a therapeutic setting, unfortunately, you are unable to attend this support group.

  • No. While I am a therapist, I will not operate as a therapist in this role. A support group focuses on shared experiences, mutual encouragement, and peer connection, while a therapy group is clinically led, treatment-focused, and designed to address mental health concerns through therapeutic interventions.

  • Free of charge, the consultation is a brief call designed to answer your questions, share what the support group offers, and ensure the space is a good fit for your needs and expectations before joining. Additionally, it is an opportunity to ensure the needs of the group members are cohesive.

  • Yes. Participation may be denied if the group is not the appropriate level of support for your current needs, if expectations do not align with the purpose of the group, or if the group would not be able to provide a safe and supportive experience for all participants. As the leader, it is my job to ensure the space remains safe for all participants.
